What's so tough about a web site?
A lot of people
thinking about putting together a site really don't consider all of the things
involved and are hence, totally surprised at the cost. Below is an overview of
what is involved in making a success of your web endeavors.
- Web Space - the first thing you
need is a place that is accessible from the net on which to put your site.
There are many free places out there if you don't mind hosting advertising. If
you want total control of the content on your site, web space will cost you
roughly $50 per month, usually with some sort of setup
charge.
- Domain Name Registration - names
for sites on the net (i.e. yahoo.com) cost money too. Domain Names must be
registered and even then, they are more or less rented, not owned... You have
to pay for re-registration every year or you lose the name. As site
registration has opened up to competition over the past couple of years, the
cost has reduced considerably.
- Site Design - anyone can design
their own site. Making the site attractive and easy to navigate is another
matter. Design services generally run at least $50 per hour and can easily get
into the thousands on the final bill. To keep people coming back to a site, it
must have changing information - site maintenance is another things that bills
at $50 per hour.
- Search Engines - Once you get
www.yourname.com up and running, you have to get traffic to the site. This is
accomplished by pumping the search engines to get listed. Anyone can hit search
engine sites and promote their own site, one at a time, day after day... I do
the leg work on this to all of the major search engines as well as many others
(approximately 1800) and include this as part of maintenance.
